If there were a Hall of Fame for motorcycle frames, the Norton Featherbed would be a shoo-in. Known for its legendary handling, the Featherbed also became a favorite of specials builders, who liked the wide-open engine bay. Most often it accommodated 650cc Triumph engines to make so-called "Tritons," the classic cafe-racer, but with some effort even the rangy 1000cc Vincent V-Twin could be persuaded into place to come up with a "Norvin."

A "NorJAP," as seen here, is not the most common Featherbed special. Starting in 1895, British engineer John Alfred Prestwich bounced between making cinema projectors and internal-combustion engines. We know him best for the latter, bearing the J.A.P. nameplate. In various forms, it was a prolific powerplant used in a wide variety of motorcycle brands, more than 20 in all. Most famous are the J.A.P.-powered Brough Superior SS100s and SS80s. This NorJAP uses Prestwich's 1000cc sidevalve V-Twin as seen in SS80s, hooked up to a Norton four-speed gearbox.

Rather than go the cafe-racer route with this bike, the running gear is standard Norton Dominator. Obviously well-used, the bike shows 6300 miles, though its unknown if that is total mileage or miles since the conversion.
