By 1949 the British motorcycle industry had yet to regain a full momentum. When, in the fall that year, Triumph unveiled their new 650cc Thunderbird at London's Earl's Court Show, press, trade, and public reaction was absolutely rapturous; here, effectively, was the world's first streamlined motorcycle! Back then motorcycles and automobiles were a crucial part of the UK's export programme; the stylish Thunderbird was thus regarded as a neat enhancement of Jaguar's XK 120 sports car, which had been equally well received when introduced the previous year. Discerning riders in USA were enthusiastic about the Thunderbird, too, right from the start, preferring the larger capacity motor to the existing half-liter engine in Speed Twins and Tiger 100s. And, hey, they loved the Thunderbird name!

During its lifespan the model naturally incorporated several technical improvements; even so, it is fair to say that the original first sighting of a T-bird made a greater impact on the viewer than any machine before or since! Despite later changes to swinging arm rear suspension, alloy cylinders, unit construction engine, full width hubs, dual seats, and so on, the purposeful aura attaching to nacelle-fork Thunderbirds ensures they will endure.

Purchased by the vendor in 2007, it has been on static display in a private museum since acquisition.
