Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873-1954) was an artistic collaborator of Cocteau from the 1920s and author of Gigi, later turned into the 1958 musical starring Maurice Chevalier. By the mid-1920s she was seen as France's greatest female writer, and was possibly romantically involved with the actress Josephine Baker (see lot 1). Having started her career acting in the Parisian music halls, she had a relationships with Matilde de Mornay (her co-star in the 1909 production of Rêve d'Égypte) and the writer Gabrielle d'Annunzio.
