Of wide form, the rich red ground inlaid with Eguchi no kimi seated reading a calligraphic scroll on the back of a recumbent elephant, in shakudo and shibuichi haritsuke chokin with details of gold and silver, signed on the reverse Miyagawa Choshun kore zu, Tenkodo Hidekuni with kao. 7.9cm (3 1/8in).

    Kawarabayashi Hidekuni was a metalworker, renowned for his sword fittings, who lived in Kyoto and was a student and adopted son of Kawarabayashi Hideoki.

    The design is taken from a painting by Miyagawa Choshun (1683-1753), a painter from Edo who specialised in ukiyoe and was influenced by Hishikawa Moronobu and members of the Kaigetsudo family.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £2,500 up to and including £300,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £300,000 up to and including £3,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
