Footnotes

  • 蝶図蒔絵螺鈿鞘印籠 銘「賢哉(花押)」 19世紀

Provenance: purchased from Barry Davies Oriental Art, London, 1988.
    Wrangham collection, no.1928.

Published: E.A.Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists, p.302, Tonei, right.

There were several metalworkers using the name Toshichika working in the 19th century and it is unclear which of these may have worked in conjunction with Tonei on the present example, although Wrangham surmised that he may have been a pupil of the sword-fitting maker Tanaka Kiyonaga.
