Footnotes

  • Provenance: The Selwyn Parkinson Collection, part 3, Sotheby's 11 October 1966, lot 235. Illustrated by Frank Tilley, Teapots and Tea, pl. 17, fig. 60. For similar teapots see Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain, revised edn., fig. 7.12, and Simon Spero's 1999 exhibition, catalogue fig. 3. The 1755 Chelsea sale catalogue referred to a 'Twisted Dragon' pattern. The cover on the present example is painted with another Japanese pattern found on Chelsea dessert wares and occasionally on teawares. Albert Amor's exhibition in 1990, fig. 9001, showed a Chelsea fluted creamjug with prunus tree pattern combined with the same zigzag border used on the neck of this teapot.
