Footnotes

  • Provenance: Simon Spero, Exhibition 1997, fig. 22, Zorensky Collection Part III, sold in these rooms on 22 February 2006, lot 105, Robyn Robb, Exhibition 2007, fig 11. This service is discussed at length in an important paper by Babette Craven and Ian Lowe, ECC Transactions, vol. 10, pt.5, 1978. They record that Mrs Yates was one of the most successful dramatic actresses of her day. She appeared as Mandane in the play Cyrus, a tragedy by John Hoole which received glowing reviews when it opened at Covent Garden in December 1768. Mrs Yates appeared regularly in the role until 1776. The source print for this cup is an illustration from 'Dramatic Characters, or Different Portraits of the English Stage' published by Robert Sayer in 1772. Some of the subjects in the service were duplicated and another coffee cup, also painted with Mrs Yates as Mandane is illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain, pl. 19, no. 354, was sadly stolen from the Garrick Club in 1971.
