• Provenance: The J J Tufnell Collection, Simon Spero Exhibition 2007, Number 7. Illustrated F Severne Mackenna, Chelsea Porcelain: The Gold Anchor Wares, pl 18, fig 33 and by the Antique Porcelain Company, 1953 Coronation Catalogue. This bowl was made at Derby during the period in which William Duesbury was running the Chelsea and Derby factories in parallel. The use of the gold anchor mark suggests that the decoration was applied at the Chelsea factory, or by an outside decorator such as James Giles. The lemon, orange and borage spray within the interior is certainly reminiscent of Giles work. Compare with similar painting of cut and peeled lemons inside a bowl illustrated by Gerald Coke, In Search of James Giles (1983), plate 35. The combination of English and Italian style buildings seen here is also present on a two-handled cup and saucer illustrated by Stephen Mitchell, The Marks on Chelsea-Derby and Early Crossed-Batons Useful Wares (2007), plate 28, which appears to be by the same hand.
