1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster with hard top
For 1967, the SL was given a larger 2,496cc engine built around a seven main-bearing crankshaft. This longer-stroke engine was much stronger and offered up more torque. Horsepower was unchanged, but flexibility was greatly improved. The 250SL also gained rear disc brakes and a collapsible steering wheel column. Gone after a single model year, the 250SL was replaced by the most developed version of the model, the 280SL. Once again, the big change came under the hood. The single-cam injected six was enlarged again, this time to 2,778cc. Horsepower was up to 180 and torque took a big jump again, this time to 193 pound-feet.
In 280 form, the SL was quick, comfortable and beautifully built. With the manual transmission it was a sporting car and with the automatic it had a tamer character. Good original examples of this iconic model are becoming increasingly hard to find, and so we are pleased to present here a car that not only benefits from an extensive and known history, but is authentic to its original specification throughout and was from new in a desirable livery.
Dating from the last year of production of the model, this car went to California in the summer of 1972 and spent most of its life there before coming into the present enthusiast ownership a few years ago. The 280 was originally supplied in the scheme in which it may be found today of black paint and rich red upholstery, it has also always had its hard top with it. From day one to now, the cars mileage is attested to and has amounted to a little over 73,000 in nearly 40 years. As one would expect from its simple background, it still retains a comprehensive documentation file which includes its original books and data sheets, and completing the presentation are the original tools.
A full documented, well presented, original and extremely attractive 280SL deserving of close inspection.
