Lot 2348
1929 $5 MS64 PCGS
The generous mintage of 662,000 pieces does not suggest a rare date, but due to the Gold Reserve Act of 1934, which made private ownership of gold coins illegal (save for coins with numismatic value), many of these then-common half eagles were either never released or turned in to the Treasury and subsequently melted. This lustrous example displays attractive rose-gold coloration on both sides. A few minor bag marks serve to limit the grade. Still, a beautiful example of this classic 20th-century gold rarity. (PCGS 8533)

Sold for US$ 42,120 inc. premium
