A nephrite jade, ruby and mother-of-pearl desk clock, Cartier, circa 1925
the round mother-of-pearl dial with gilt Arabic numerals and hands within a square nephrite panel with cabochon ruby and cream enamel detail; dial signed Cartier, reverse signed European Watch and Clock, no 1528 and 614, Co. Inc. France; with signed fitted box; dimensions: 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 5/8in. (minor loss to enamel, damage to no. 2 on dial)

    Louis Monta Bell (1891-1958) was an American film director, producer and editor. He began his career as a respected journalist in Washington DC, moving to Hollywood in 1923. He worked for Charlie Chaplin as an editor and assistant director, and became best known for directing Greta Garbo in The Torrent, her first American film. Throughout his career (with Paramount, Warner's and MGM pictures) he directed, produced and wrote over 40 films combined, from comedies to melodramas.

    Mr. Bell was married for a brief period to Betty Lawford, mother of Peter Lawford; additionally, he worked with Marion Davies, and during his marriage to Lucille Marie Howard Bell, the couple visited the Hearst mansion on numerous occasions.
