1949 Royal Enfield 125cc RE 'Flying Flea'
Registration no. DUD 679
Frame no. 29664
Engine no. 29664
A 125cc version of DKW's advanced two-stroke lightweight - the 98cc RT – Royal Enfield's smallest model first appeared in 1939. Known as the 'Flying Flea', it was supplied to the British Army in large numbers during WW2, and when hostilities ended re-emerged in civilian guise as the RE. The unit-construction engine incorporated a three-speed, hand-change gearbox, and this ensemble was installed in a rigid frame fitted with rubber-suspended girder front fork. A banana-shaped exhaust header pipe for 1948 and a telescopic front fork for 1950 were the only changes of significance before the RE was extensively revamped for 1951 with a new, much improved engine and loop-type, full cradle frame. In this form the RE2, as it had become known, ran on into 1953 before being dropped, although the 148cc 'Ensign' version continued.

First registered on 5th May 1949, this example was purchased in a dismantled state in August 1990 and restored over the course of the next three years. Work carried out included sand blasting the frame and repainting it black; rebuilding the engine with new piston ring, crankshaft bearings and seals; and rewinding the ignition coil. Other parts renewed included the clutch corks and sprocket; gearbox bearings; wheel rims and spokes; light switch; suspension rubber rings; rear mudguard; seat springs; footrest rubbers and handlebar grips (receipts available). Its restoration completed in April 1993, the machine is described as in generally good condition and offered with its original logbook and a spare parts list.
