An 18-inch terrestrial index floor globe
Williams-Pridham; Los Angeles, California, circa 1914
made up of twelve chromolithographed metal gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the steel meridian graduated in degrees, the oceans showing warm and cold ocean currents, the continents with nation states coloured, and showing mountains, rivers, towns and cities. Petrograd is shown, indicating a date of 1914-1924. Signed with a circular printed cartouche: "18 INCH/ Williams-Pridham/ INDEX GLOBE/ COMPANY/ Los Angeles/ CALIFORNIA". With a unique feature of an index of place names and locations printed on a continuous roll of paper set within the globe, turned by a round knob set through the south pole, and viewable within two rectangular windows fitted with clear magnifying glasses, each approximately 1 x 3 inches, set in the globe on opposite sides in ocean areas. Raised on an oak stand in the Spanish Baroque taste, having four quadrants supporting a horizon band with engraved paper calendar and zodiac, the central richly turned central standard on four shaped flat-sided cabriole legs with scroll feet, on cruciform stepped platform.
