A German sporting crossbow by G.H. Keller
dated 1592
The heavy steel bow retaining the original twisted cord bowstring, the binding cord decorated with red wool pom poms. Wood tiller swelling in the center, the stippled sides relief-carved with scrollwork and winged hippocamps. The top, bottom and rear veneered with white horn panels profusely incised and stained with floral meander incorporating monster heads and grotesque masks, the underside with two figures of hunters carrying crossbows. Rear left panel signed G.H. Keller Underside of front dated 1592. Pins framed by engraved bond escutcheons. Scrolling trigger retaining cord covering. Folding set trigger. Swiveling safety. Folding brass and steel rear sight.
Condition: Wood showing some wear and light marks. Two bone panels are restorations.
