An extravagent American presentation sword
dated 1890
By Ridabock of New York. Straight 30 inch blade etched and gilt with scrollwork, one side with figures of soldiers and inscription Vt. Nat'l. Guard, the reverse with presentation inscription Awarded to Capt. J. Gray the Most Popular Officer in the Guard by the Rutland Herold August 23rd 1890. Elaborate gilt brass hilt comprising downcurving shell pierced with scrollwork and foliage and featuring the figure of Garibaldi; quillon with finial in the form of a helmeted head; knucklebow molded with strapwork; pommel molded with laurels, lion heads and surmounted by an eagle. White shagreen and gilt wire-wrapped grip. Nickeled scabbard with pierced, gilt brass mounts, the suspension mounts featuring full relief figures of a Federal eagle and warrior a la antique respectively. Together with a French gilt brass sword stand comprising two dolphins with upturned tails mounted on a rectangular base, the underside marked Hour,Legivne/Pari/Made i France.
Condition: Blade showing light spotting and some wear. Fine hilt with some wear to gilt finish. Scabbard fine, showing some light spotting to nickel.
