A Civil War era U.S. Naval officer's sword
Slightly curved 29 1/2 blade by W. Clauberg, the spine marked Iron Proof; narrow fuller below the spine extending to the false edge, both sides with 15 inch etched panel: one side featuring foliage, USN riband, fouled anchor and an eagle perched on a ship's gun; the other with panoply of lances and trident featuring a USN pennant, thirteen stars, fouled anchor with Federal shield and foliage below. Brass hilt of standard 1850 pattern highlighted with punched engraving, including an anchor on the pommel. Shagreen-wrapped grip bound in brass wire. Shagreen-covered scabbard with brass mounts of standard pattern.
Condition: Fine blade showing minor scratches and two areas of grey staining. Hilt and scabbard showing a few minor marks.
