A tulwar-hilted kilij
probably 18th or early 19th century
Curved 32 inch watered blade, the front side with narrow, interrupted fullers, decorated with numerous Arabic inscriptions in gold overlay, and set with five small cabochons; two of turquoise and three of glass. Reverse two broad, nearly full-length fullers and two panels of gold koftgari inscriptions. Tulwar hilt with long, pierced languets, short quillons, knucklebow and wide wheel pommel, all decorated with gold overlaid florals and banding. Finial of knucklebow in the form of two animal heads. Together with associated leather-covered scabbard, the leather surface textured as fur, the engraved silver mounts retaining traces of gilt finish, the throat inscribed.
Condition: Blade with some loss to gold decoration and showing one area of pitting some 14 inches from the point on both sides. Large inscriptions along forward edge possibly added later. Hilt with some losses to gold overlay.
