SERRA, JUNIPERO. 1713-1784.
LETTER TO MISSION SAN GABRIEL WRITTEN DURING SERRA'S CONFIRMATION VISIT.
Autograph Letter Signed (Fr. Junipero Serra") three times, 2 pp recto and verso, 4to, n.p., November 6, 1778, containing instructions for the maintenance of the mission's "Confirmation Book," leaf spotted and toned particularly on verso, left edge rough.

In 1774 Pope Clement XIV granted Fr. Serra, the founder of California's mission system, the authority to administer the sacrament of Confirmation, though the priest did not hear of it until 1778. Upon notification, Serra set out on a trip to the established California missions to administer Confirmation to the baptized, beginning at San Carlos in June, San Diego in September, and San Gabriel in November and continuing on until he was ordered to stop in 1779 by California Governor Felipe de Neve, with whom Serra quarreled frequently. In this letter Serra gives instructions to the San Gabriel missionaries on the method of maintaining the "Libro de Confirmacion," or Confirmation Book recording the names of those to whom the sacrament is given, while on the second page citing the document that gives him the authority to administer the sacrament.
