Footnotes

  • Following its acquisition by John North Willys in 1907, the revitalised Overland company went from strength to strength, production increasing steadily until by the start of WWI only Ford could claim a higher output. Sliding-gear transmissions had replaced the previous epicyclic type in 1909, coincidentally the same year that Ford introduced the Model T that would use the latter form of transmission for the next 17 years! A six-cylinder model returned to the range in 1915, this new 40/50hp car joined a brace of fours, one of 30hp the other 35. This right-hand drive example's wheelbase length and '85' chassis number prefix suggest that it is a 35hp Big Four 85. The latter was powered by a 4.0-litre engine, the contemporary Light Four 90 having a 3.0-litre unit. The car was imported from Australia some years ago and acquired for restoration by a previous owner (a coachbuilder) as a rolling chassis complete with bonnet and bulkhead. A roadster-style body was constructed and fitted to the chassis after the latter had been cleaned and repainted, in which partially-completed form the vehicle was offered for sale at Bonhams' Harrogate auction in June 2002 (Lot 456). The current vendor purchased the Overland, together with another vehicle, from a collector earlier this year. Only offered for sale because of a lack of garage space, the car is described as an 'incomplete restoration', though clearly much progress has been made since 2002, and is said to be in generally good condition. However, it should be noted that the engine has not been started (it turns freely), that the electrics need rewiring, and that the condition of the transmission is not known. There are no documents with this sporting Edwardian, which is sold strictly as viewed.
