Footnotes

  • Based initially at Tours and from 1906 in Paris, Delahaye built its first automobile in 1894 and soon diversified into commercial vehicle manufacture. Its early products tended to be rather lacklustre, but then in 1935 came the first of a new generation that would change the marque's image: the T135 Coupe Des Alpes. A fine sporting car, the T135 somewhat paradoxically borrowed its engine from one of its maker's trucks. The 3.2-litre, six-cylinder, overhead-valve unit produced 110bhp on triple Solex carburettors, while the chassis featured transverse-leaf independent front suspension, four-speed synchromesh or Cotal gearboxes, centre-lock wire wheels and Bendix brakes.
Delahaye improved on the formula the following year with the 3.6-litre, 120/130bhp T135MS, and the competition 'Special' version was soon making a name for itself. Indeed, it would turn out to be one of the outstanding road and track cars of the era, taking 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places in the run-to-sportscar-regulations 1936 French Grand Prix and winning the Monte Carlo Rally and Le Mans 24-Hour Race outright in 1937 and 1938 respectively. Prince Bira won the 1938 Donington 12-Hour Sports Car Race in Prince Chula's example and went on to take victory in Brooklands' 'fastest road car in England' race against formidable opposition that included an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 and 4-litre Tabot-Darracq. The model reappeared post-WW2 as the 135M with the 3.6-litre engine and lasted in production until 1951.
The car offered here was created on a triple-carburettor Delahaye 135MS chassis in its native France in the late 1950s as a replica of the limited production 'Special' and fitted with door-less, two-seat, competition bodywork. '80048' later went to the USA where it was fully detailed to concours standard and shown twice, gaining a 1st place award both times. It is understood that the engine, starter motor and dynamo were fully rebuilt and new Borrani wire wheels fitted in 1996. The instruments were overhauled in the UK and correct Marchal lights are fitted all round. Described a 'very fast', this car completed the demanding California Mille event in 1996, crossing the finishing line in 3rd place.
The current vendor purchased the car at Brooks' Quail Lodge Sale in 1998 (Lot 102) and imported it into France (EU duties paid). Between 2003 and 2006 the engine overhauled and balanced; the original wheels and brakes refurbished; and a new original-type gearbox installed. Finished in red with beige/brown leather interior, the car is described as in generally very good condition and offered with EU import documentation, Delahaye factory correspondence, and (copy) Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Certificate of Title.
