Footnotes

  • First registered on 1st November 1935, this Frazer Nash BMW 319 has been totally restored. The engine is the slightly later BMW 326 unit with the improved OZ74 cylinder head, which is fitted with hardened valve seats and larger inlet valves. It now has a Bristol 85a crankshaft, Bristol connecting rods, high-compression pistons, Bristol high-capacity oil pump, Bristol intermediate camshaft and Bristol distributor. Two SU HS4 carburettors are mounted on a special inlet manifold while the original exhaust manifold is retained in modified form. All of this makes for considerably more power than the original 50bhp; a recent dynamometer test showed 65bhp (at the flywheel) at just under 4,000rpm and a very flat torque curve with 100lbs/ft at 1,600rpm, dropping gently to 90lbs/ft at 3,800 revs. This is said to provide a powerful yet very flexible driving experience.
A Volvo gearbox is fitted using a modified Hirth bell-housing and the BMW clutch mechanism. The clutch pressure plate is a correct Fichtel & Sachs as used on Alfa Romeos and the driven plate is MGA. The original Hirth gearbox is available if required by the new owner and can easily be reinstated, but the Volvo 'box suits the car well. Boasting finned aluminium drums on all four wheels, the brakes were converted to hydraulic actuation some time ago and the hydraulic fluid has recently been drained and replaced with DOT4. Good Avon Tourist tyres are fitted to the desirable knock-on peg-drive wheels.
The interior has been completely re-trimmed and re-carpeted, with seats and panels upholstered in red Connolly hide and a new hood made in the correct materials at a cost of £6,000, which figure does not include the cost of the materials used. Photocopy invoices for the labour costs are available. It has also had a bare metal re-spray in British Racing Green and comes with a matching mohair hood bag.
The car appears to have had very few owners that have actually used it, these being 'Bonvalot', a Mr Rapp, Jaqueline Burton, J D Carne and the current vendor. Others listed on the original registration document do not seem to have registered the car for road use. 'CMT 948' is reported as totally reliable since its return to the road following the 2006-2007 rebuild and completed the 1,200 kilometres to Munich in 2008 with no trouble. It has recently appeared in various VSCC rallies and tours, attracting much favourable comment. Offered with old-style logbook, current MoT/tax and Swansea V5, this is probably the best 319 Cabriolet in Europe, its only fault being that the Hobson Telegauge petrol level indicator is proving rather temperamental.
