Footnotes

  • Built in a long run of stylishly minimalist, A and B models from 1948, Porsche's perennial 356 made its final transformation with the Type 6 body in 1964. Designated 356C, it had a new ZF steering gear and a compensating spring at the rear to calm the swing axle rear suspension. Four-wheel disc brakes were also part of the revision, and a 12 volt electrical system became available. Two 1600cc engines were offered, the C version with 75bhp and the SC with higher compression and counterweight crankshaft achieving 95bhp. Even more powerful was the 4-cam Carrera 2 engine of 1966cc capacity which was rated at 130bhp.
It was this model that was responsible for the popularity of the Porsche marque soaring, and the production of more than 10,000cars for 1964 bested the company's total over its first decade. With the advent of the 911, however, regular production finally ended in September 1965, by which time all 356s were being shipped to the US. The 356 enjoyed much success in period both in rallying and racing, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, and the Carrera Panamericana.
Offered here is a right-hand drive 356C with Cabriolet bodywork by Reutter. The subject of earlier restoration, the paintwork is red and the seats are trimmed in black leather. A letter on file from Porsche Cars Great Britain records that 159974 was manufactured by their parent company, Dr Ing h c F Porsche AG in Germany, in March 1964. PCGB confirms that the vehicle in its original colour of Ruby Red was subsequently delivered new to the UK where it was sold 2 April 1964. At some time, the original 712265 numbered engine has been replaced, but by an ex-T6B 1582cc power unit number P806572 from production year 1962/model year 1963, which, according to the vendor, has received attention from 356 engine specialist Andy Prill. Also on file are several old MOTs from 1974 at 27,000m to 69,000m recorded on the certificate for 2009/10, while mileage of 69,626 was displayed on the odometer when consigned..
