Footnotes

  • First used by Hillman in 1932, the Minx name continued on the company's medium-sized saloon in the post-WW2 era. All post-war Minxes featured unitary construction of the chassis/body and by the mid-1950s the old sidevalve engine of pre-war days had been phased out in favour of a new 1,390cc overhead-valve power unit. The latter was enlarged to 1,494cc on the Minx Series III of 1958, the latter gaining distinctive tail fins for 1959 when it became the IIIA. The following year saw a hypoid bevel rear axle adopted on the IIIB, the engine was further enlarged (to 1,592cc) for the IIIC introduced in the autumn of 1961.
The 1957 Minx offered here has been fitted with a tuned example of the superior 1,725cc five-bearing engine found in a variety of Rootes Group products from 1965 onwards. Its current owner acquired the car in 2002 with the intention of modifying it to race at the Goodwood Revival meetings. Its restoration completed in 2006, the Minx duly raced at Goodwood that same year, finishing a creditable 7th in the two-part St Mary's Trophy event for production saloon cars dating from the 1950s and 1960s. Apart from the engine, other modifications and upgrades include altered suspension and wheels, disc brakes at the front and larger-than-standard drums at the rear. The vendor advises us that the car has been totally reliable and is of the opinion that it is capable of further tuning and development. Finished in grey with red leatherette interior, 'NTN 208' is described as in generally good condition and offered with sundry restoration invoices and Swansea V5 registration document. An ideal entry-level car suitable for a wide variety of classic motor sports events.
