The larger bowl with multiple and prominent patch, wedge and peg indigenous repairs, and the smaller with a black breadfruit ulu gum repair.

These two historically important wood bowls were presented by Prince Jonah Kalanianaole (Kuhio) (1871-1922), a direct descendant of the kings of Kauai to Mr. Francis March Hatch and his wife at a congressional luau party held in Washington D.C. on February 4, 1908 following the annexation of Hawaii. Prince Kuhio at the time was the Hawaiian delegate to Congress, while Hatch was an important historical figure active in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy and one of three Republic of Hawaii representatives who signed the treaty of annexation to the United States in 1897. The menu, written entirely in Hawaiian and mounted in a custom koa frame, is an official Congressional document and carries an official red, white and blue ribbon.
