Footnotes

  • Giulio Rosati (1858-1917) was a leading member of the group of Italian Orientalists. Like his contemporaries Ettore Simonetti (1857-1909), Giuseppe Aureli (1858-1929) and Enrico Tarenghi (1848-1938), he was based in Rome in the late nineteenth century. He studied painting at the Academy of Rome under Francesco Podesti (1880-1895), working mainly in watercolour. He is associated with a technique of impeccable precision, partly inherited from Ludwig Deutsch and Jean-Léon Gérôme.

He never went to the Middle East but was able to create his images using photographs, literature, engravings, clothes and objects brought back by travellers. Orientalist subjects became increasingly popular among American and British collectors toward the end of the 18th century as souvenirs of their exotic travels.
