Footnotes

  • This pair of paintings was exhibited in 1837. The current owner is a descendant of Charles Tilt the publisher (of Cruikshank among others) who bought these paintings originally to make prints from, following the tradition at that time, of moralistic pictures, which frequently contrasted the themes of Industry and Idleness. These two pictures amply illustrate these themes, contrasting the frightened family of the wounded poacher in their dark cottage interior, with the happy secure family group of the hardworking countryman (perhaps the gamekeeper) settling down to dinner and giving alms to the beggar on their doorstep.
