CANADIAN ARCTIC
A very interesting amateur album of upwards of 100 images (a few loose), seemingly compiled by Jean Revillon, many thought to relate to Northern Alberta, mostly gelatin silver prints, window mounted, original green cloth album, images mostly 80 x 135mm., small 4to, [c.1907]

Footnotes

  • One loose photograph is inscribed on the verso "Preparing camp—Mr. J.M. Revillon cutting wood. Photo by Jean Revillon 1907", and another image shows a boat clearly marked with Revillon's name. A view of the interior of a store is identified on the verso as being at Spirit Lake (Yukon Territory?).

Jean Revillon, in partnership with Captain Thierry Mallet, owned the fur-trading company Revillon Freres. After World I the partners, in a move calculated to give them an advantage in competing with the Hudson Bay Co., financed Robert Flaherty's ground-breaking film about the Inuit, which was to emerge as Nanook of the North (1922).

Images include: sledging with dogs and ponies (usually laden with pelts); making or breaking camp; a group showing the passage of a large boat by rafting or bow-hauling; many of various huts (stores or homes); stern-wheel steamers; and group shots including native Americans.
