Lot 70
A G. H. Askew stamped centre shafted putter circa 1900

Sold for £ 3,120 (US$ 4,352) inc. premium
Putters, Patent & Unusual Clubs
A G. H. Askew stamped centre shafted putter circa 1900
Its head is in the shape of a two-faced hammer and has 17 holes in its base that reduce the weight of an already very heavy club. Maker unknown.

Not recorded in The Club Maker’s Art and G.H. Askew is not recorded as a professional, suggesting it was for or by an affluent amateur. It most likely fell foul of the banning of centre shafted putters following the Walter Travis win in the 1904 Amateur, when the golfing authorities banned centre shafted putters for a decade or so.
