Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
    Holland Galleries, New York, 1911
    Private collection, Alabama
Thence by descent to the present owner

This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's works.

In correspondence, Kathleen Burnisde notes of Woman with a Parasol in a Park, " It appears to be a fine example of Hassam's first mature phase. Stylistically and thematically, it belongs with the works of the late 1880s to mid-1890s."

The purchaser of the painting from Holland galleries in early October of 1911 apparently quickly contacted the artist as there are two letters dated Oct. 7 and 18 from Hassam discussing his work's sizes, pricing and his working method. On October 7 he writes; "As to my liking them if I do not like them I don't let them go out. Anything that I have completed to my liking I sign and let go. If it does not suit me I keep it by me until it does or I destroy it. This is the difference between an artist and a manufacturer."
