Footnotes

  • This is one of several Ivor Novello awards presented to the Beatles in 1964 for 'She Loves You', which won Most Broadcast Work Of The Year and Highest Certified British Sales. The group also received an award for Outstanding Services To British Music.

'She Loves You' was the track that firmly established the Beatles at the top of the pop music tree in 1963. Although it followed other No.1 hits, it went on to become the best-selling single in the UK in the 1960s and remained in the Top 20 for some six months. It was composed by John and Paul after they appeared in Newcastle in June 1963 and Paul has recalled they wrote it in their bedroom at the Turk's Hotel. They recorded it at Abbey Road a few days later, on 1st July, and it was released on 23rd August. It passed the million sales barrier at the end of November and was No.1 twice, for four and two weeks respectively, and in the top three in between.

Accompanying the lot is a photograph of John with a fan to whom he originally gave the award and a copy of a photograph of John at home in 'Kenwood' with several Ivor Novello awards in the background.
