'Kruger in ballingschap' inscribed 'Kruger in ballinschap' and bears signature and date 'A. van Wouw 1907' bronze 13.2cm (5 3/16in) high (excluding base)
Footnotes
LITERATURE: A.E. Duffey, Anton van Wouw: The Smaller Works, (Pretoria, 2008), Nisini casting illustrated p.52
"This small sculpture shows a dejected President Kruger as an old man seated in a large easy chair with a blanket over his knees and a great State Bible on his lap. The old president holds the top of the Book with his right hand and rests his left arm on the armrest of the chair. His eyes are not on the Bible, but stare into the uncertain, unfathomable future." (Ibid.)
Van Wouw made two versions of this subject: the present lot being the smaller model, and a larger model measuring 24.5cm high. The smaller version was exhibited in London in 1909 at a retrospective exhibition at the Fine Arts Society.
