A builders' model of the Turret Deck steamship Elaine
Hull from solid timber, painted black to the waterline and maroon below, with painted draft marks and a single, four blade brass propeller. Painted and varnished decks, with inscribed plank lines in Indian ink and brass guardrails and stanchions. Open bridge with wheel and binnacle. Details include anchors, chain and windless, cargo derricks and winches, ventilators, ship's boats on davits. Mounted on posts in a contemporary display case with an ivorine builder's plaque for William Doxford and Sons, Sunderland. 50.5x11.5x17in (128x29x43cm)

Footnotes

  • William Doxford and Sons patented the distinctive design of the Turret Ship in 1893, and built 178 vessels of the type before production ceased eleven years later. The SS Elaine, operated by the Lion Shipping Line, was wrecked in Bunbury Bay, south of Perth, Western Australia in February 1908, carrying a cargo of timber.
