An Italian 18th century fruitwood marquetry commode
in the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini
the rectangular top centred by a medallion with a trophy of playing cards and musical instruments, above three long drawers, the top frieze with portraits in medallions, flower baskets and pearl garlands, the front centred by a medallion depicting a fishing maiden, with similar inlay to the sides, on square tapering feet with foliate inlay, 126.5cm wide, 59cm deep, 90.5cm high (49.5in wide, 23in deep, 35.5in high).

  • Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), began working as a carpenter for a monastery and then established his own workshop in Milan in 1758. In addition to serving the court of Milan, Maggiolini created pieces for other European royalty including the king of Poland, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the duchess of Austria, and Napoleon's widow, Empress Maria Luisa.

    So renowned was Maggiolini's marquetry furniture during his own lifetime his work was widely copied. He created masterpieces of illusion with his compositions of stained and natural color exotic woods, bouquets, classical architecture, musical instruments, and swags of ribbons and fruit.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
