Footnotes

  • The first version of the Penitent Magdalene was commissioned from Canova in 1796. It was acquired by the French diplomat Juliot who then in turn gave the sculpture to Count Giambattista Sommariva who exhibited the work in the Salon of 1808. The work met with great acclaim and was much admired by both the critics and the general public. The original marble version is located in the Museo Agostino, in Genova.

Marchino studied under Bonzanigo and opened his own workshop in Turin. He is renwoned for his skill at carving particularly detailed pieces and king Carlo Felice named him 'scultor regio in avorio'.

A further bust by Marchino of the poet Vittorio Alfieri was sold by Sotheby's Paris, 16 March 2007 lot 30.
