Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Ex Dr Gonick & M. Wirth Collection, Geneva, Switzerland, 1970s.

    Literature:
Vessels decorated with applied 'snake-thread' decoration were made at the important glass-making centre of Cologne as well as in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Examples from the latter, of which this flask is one, tend to be made in colourless or pale greenish glass. For a flask in light green glass with a bluish tinge found at Sidon and now in the Louvre cf. V. Arveiller-Dulong & M.-D. Nenna, Les verres antiques du Musée du Louvre, vol. 2, (Paris 2005), pp.337, 389, no.1044.
