Footnotes
This work was executed in 1873. On the reverse is a sketch of a peasant girl, circa 1877.
PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Brussels; Bonham's Greek sale, London, 24 May 2005, Lot 46; Private collection, London.
This Still life was executed in 1873, when Pantazis was attending the Mommen studios in Brussels. These studios gathered the largest number of artists from the period. Inspired by the artistic talent and judicious counselling of the most innovative artists in Belgium, Pantazis created his little masterpiece. The delicacy of the brushstrokes, the pearl-like and refined colouring together with the balance of the composition, all these elements show that, at a determining moment of his career, Pantazis was able to produce works of great plastic beauty. On the reverse of the panel, a sketch of a peasant girl was painted around 1877. Executed with brio and sobriety, it was probably inspired by the numerous trips to the Campine region of Antwerp, where he practised plein-air painting.
