Footnotes

  • Built by the French and launched at Rochefort in 1744, L'Invincible was the second of a new design of 74 gun ship and the most sophisticated warship of her day. She was captured by the British at the Battle of Cape Finisterre in May 1747 and after survey at Portsmouth was commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Invincible the first ship to bear that name. In February 1758, whilst leaving the anchorage off St Helens en route to Nova Scotia, she was stranded on the Horse Tail Bank and despite strenuous attempts to float her off, finally fell over and was lost on February 22nd.

The wreck was discovered by fishermen in 1979 and careful excavation of the interior by teams of divers produced a stunning collection of artefacts only bettered by the wreck of the Mary Rose some years earlier.
