Footnotes

  • HMS Newfoundland a Crown Colony class Light Cruiser, pennant 59. Built by Swan Hunter and commissioned in 1942, she became in 1943 flagship of the 15th Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean. Torpedoed in the Sicily campaign, she spent some time in the Boston Navy yard undergoing extensive repairs before resuming duties in 1944. Joining the British Far East fleet, she took part in the assault on Truk in the Caroline Islands and was part of the Commonwealth fleet which occupied the Japanese Naval base at Yokosua. She was present in Tokyo Bay at the surrender of the Japanese Forces and subsequently took part in the repatriation of Allied prisoners of war. Placed in reserve as a training vessel, she was sold in 1959 to the Peruvian Navy as Almirante Grau and was scrapped in 1979.
