Lot Details
TOM STAFFORD'S MEDALLION CARRIED ON GEMINI 3.
Flown on Gemini 3, a circular medallion, sterling silver, 1 inch diameter. The obverse has the crew names and "The Molly Brown" with an illustration of a Gemini spacecraft floating on the water.

Gemini 3 was the first manned test flight of the new two-astronaut spacecraft, demonstrating some of the ways the US might journey to the moon. "Molly Brown" was Grissom's nickname for the Gemini spacecraft, after the "unsinkable" Broadway heroine.
The medallion is mounted onto a card with TOM STAFFORD'S signed note which reads: "The Gemini 3 medallion attached to this card was presented to me by the Gemini 3 crew of Gus Grissom and John Young after their March 1965 flight. They were the first manned crew in the Gemini Program and tested the vehicle's capabilities during their three orbit flight.
Sadly, Gus later died on January 27, 1967, when a fire erupted during tests inside the Apollo 1 spacecraft. He gave his life for the Apollo Program along with his crew of Ed White and Roger Chaffee. The changes made to the Apollo spacecraft enabled me to fly to the moon with John and Gene Cernan on Apollo 10 during May 1969. That flight allowed the first lunar landing mission of Apollo 11 to be carried out on schedule during July 1969."
