Footnotes

  • Saint Clare (Chiara) was the founder of the Order of the Poor Clares.
The text at the foot of the embroidery reads: 'Ricamo antico di oro fino di grande decoratione che servi in reliquario', which translates as 'Ancient embroidery of fine gold that was used in a reliquary'. The text on the reverse reads: 'Ricamo d'oro fino di grandissima decoratione che a servito anticamente nel reliquario di S. Chiara molto tempo se ne deve tener conto grandissimo'. This translates as: 'Embroidery of fine gold of great decoration the was used in old times in the reliquary of Saint Chiara, for a long time it was held in high regard'. The reverse appears to have been part of a religious book, since it seems to be part of the Transitus of San Francis (connected to S. Chiara).
