Christ carrying the cross over his shoulder, with Simon of Cyrene behind and two soldiers tormenting and beating him, a further figure emerging from a tower behind and a dog in the foreground, another soldier with two bound captives to the right, the upper section depicting three further figures, mounted in a modern gilt rectangular frame, 100cm high x 32cm wide

Footnotes

The present relief would have originally belonged to a larger multi-figured Passion altarpiece and depicts the fifth Station of the Cross. It would probably have been positioned to the left of a central depiction of the Crucifixion. From the beginning of the 16th century narrative altarpieces became increasingly more sophisticated, reaching their peak around 1520-40.
The distinctive physiognomy of the central soldier in the present relief has comparables in South German altarpieces of this type, although similar compositions were also produced in Brabant during this period.
