Footnotes

  • This large carved alabaster figure was probably part of an Annunciation group: Gabriel's missing right hand would have been raised with a sign of benediction towards the separate figure of Mary. The Mannerist style of the piece, with softly flowing drapery and gentle spiral composition, indicates a Southern Netherlands origin. This large single figure would probably have been part of an altarpiece, rood-loft or sacrament tower. Most of these architectural structures were destroyed during the iconoclastic uprisings of the second half of the sixteenth century, with only fragmentary figures surviving. The distinct Mannerist style that developed in Antwerp was strongly influenced by the painter, sculptor and architect Frans Floris (1517-1570). The son of a stone cutter and brother of an architect and sculptor, Floris studied in Italy and was particularly influenced by Michelangelo. When Floris returned to Antwerp, he set up a prolific workshop after the Italian model, employing many men and working on numerous important commissions.
