William Barnett Spencer (British, born circa 1810-died circa 1884)
The British four-master Vanduara at sea under full sail signed 'W.B. Spencer' (lower left) oil on canvas 19 x 31 in. (48.3 x 78.7 cm.)
Footnotes
The magnificent Vanduara was built in Scotland by Connells of Glasgow in 1882. Constructed of iron and designed with four masts, she was registered at 2,086 tons gross (2,012 net) and measured 292 feet in length with a 42 foot beam. Owned by J.D. Clink of Greenock, she was by far the largest vessel in his small fleet, all of which were named after famous racing yachts. Vanduara, Clink's first 4-master, had an excellent reputation for speed and her run from Deal to New Zealand in 1885 only narrowly missed creating the record passage time thanks to contrary winds four days out from her destination of Auckland. Sold to S. Goldberg of Swansea in 1898, she was sunk by a German submarine on 2nd May 1917 when bound for Le Havre from Savannah La Mar, Jamaica, carrying a cargo of dyewood.
