A large shipbuilders' model of the M.S. "Northern Prince" for the Furness Prince Line

the hull built up from the solid in lifts in ¼ in. =1 ft. scale, painted with a double red bottom, grey and white topsides, inset brass portholes, lowered gangways, bulwark cut-outs, rudder, and two brass propellers. The decks are of laid veneer, the foredeck and forward and aft work decks are painted a rust color with the deck plating drawn in India ink, the upper decks are in veneer with the deck planking scored in and stained brown. The decks are fitted with numerous details including: anchors, anchor chain, anchor windlass, chocks, bollards, ventilators, railings, cargo hatches with grey painted covers, masts rigged with standing and running rigging for cargo booms, cargo winches, enclosed bridge with enclosed bridge wings canopy frames, running lights, funnel painted black with r with Prince’s plume, (6) lifeboats rigged with davits, docking wheel, binnacle and engine telegraph, flagstaff, and numerous other details. Displayed on six baluster turned silver plated pedestals on a raised plinth within a mahogany framed glass case.
139-½ x 29 x 46-½ in.(354 x 74 x 118 cm.) cased.

Footnotes

  • Built in 1928 to accommodate 101 first class passengers and cargo, the M/S "Northern Prince" was owned by the Furness, Withy & Company's Furness Prince Line for the New York to Argentina service. During World War II she acted as a troop carrier before being sunk by a German aircraft in the Straits of Kythira, Greece, on April 3, 1941.
