the hull built up from the solid in lifts in ¼ in. = 1 ft. scale, and painted with a salmon pink bottom, black and topsides with inset brass portholes, rudder, and single brass propeller, four raked masts with standing and running rigging, deck details include three silver plated anchors, handrails and stanchions, fog horn, companionways, twelve lifeboats on davits, fore and aft bridges with brass binnacle, helm and twin telegraphs, skylights, twelve brass ventilators, deck seats, two signal cannons, navigation lamps and twin funnels finished in scarlet and black, raised on four supports, in later glazed mahogany display case.
128-¾ x 60 x 26-¾ in. (327 x 153 x 68 cm.) cased.

Footnotes

  • Built by the French Line (CGT) in St. Nazaire, the S.S. La Champagne was launched on the 15th May 1885. She was built to accommodate 390 first class, 65 second class and 600 third class passengers and could travel at speeds of up to 17 knots. She left Le Havre, France on her maiden voyage to New York in May 1886, and ran this route until 1905 when she was transferred to the Mexican service. In 1913 she was transferred to the Panama route, and then in 1915 she was chartered by the Compagnie Sud Atlantique. In May of the same year she ran aground outside of St. Nazaire harbor and broke her back, ending her career.
