Lot 141
A fine mid 18th century double foliot kake dokei with alarm

Sold for £ 5,400 (US$ 6,910) inc. premium
A fine mid 18th century double foliot kake dokei with alarm
The straight sided bell with domed centre and pronounced rim secured by a turned brass knob, over a pair of foliot bars with 35 notches and centre shaped with a pair of 'horns', the iron top and bottom plates united by rectangular section pillars, the rear plate, dial and side doors decorated in a mottled acid-etched finish, the dial with fixed black and gilt lacquered chapter ring enclosing a rotating centrre with steel hand and 13 apertures for alarm setting, the weight driven movement with verge escapement and twin foliots, the alarm striking on the bell via a hammer with curved head, the alarm train powered by a weight in the form of a carved fish, the going and striking trains powered by decorated gourds filled with sand, all mounted on a wooden wall bracket with glazed and material-lined hood 24cms (9.5ins) high

Footnotes

  • This clock originated from the north of Japan, but judging by the quality of the work generally, was probably made in Nagoya. The weather in the North is more extreme and the gourd weights could be emptied or topped up with sand to overcome the viscosity problems of the lubricants used within the movement. The fish-shaped weight for the alarm train is highly unusual.
