Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Private collection, Lebanon. The painting was initially gifted by the artist to a family in his native village of Mouhaidthe, southern Lebanon.

This piece is one of the earliest examples of Abboud's works to appear at an international auction and epitomises his earlier style. It is important to note that it is only in the early stages of Abboud's career in the late 40s/early 50s that he depicts figures in his works. By around 1953 his style had evolved from figural/semi-figural depictions to full abstraction. It was to the latter style that the artist remained faithful throughout the rest of his career.

Abboud was educated in the late 40s in Paris by Fernand Léger who in around 1910 had developed his own form of cubism, which was shortly after mixed with elements of futurism, (see Gilles Neret, F. Léger., New York, 1993, p.102 and 242). Léger's influence on Abboud's early works can be clearly seen in this striking cubist depiction of Kurdish man.

For comparable depictions of Kurdish figures in Abboud's early works see Claude Lemand (ed.) Shafic Abboud, Paris, 2006, pp.31-36. The two works illustrated in this book titled 'La Famille Kurde' and 'Les Fous' show similar figures to that depicted here but in the greater contexts of family/domestic settings, opening up the possibility that this work is a study for a larger, more detailed piece.

This does not however detract from the fact that this work is a rare example of the small body of Abboud's early figural paintings still surviving which sit in stark contrast to his later abstract works.
