  • Herbert Austin of the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Co. designed the first Wolseley prototype in 1895 and an improved model in 1897, but it was not until 1899 that the first really successful model was produced, a 3 1/2hp four wheeler. It was such a model that participated in the Thousand Miles Trial of 1900, confirming Wolseley to be a serious player in the infant British motor industry. On that event Wolseley’s entry was driven by their Chief Designer Herbert C. Austin, taking 1st Prize in Class B and winning the French Club Silver Medal. The 6hp Wolseley of 1904 was conventional in most respects, featuring a forward mounted, horizontal, single-cylinder engine with bore and stroke of 4 1/2 in x 5 in. Final drive was provided by central chain and its most popular guise was a two-seater configuration. Cooling was provided by distinctive gilled tubes wrapped around the bonnet – a Wolseley feature. One present day regular user of a 1904 6hp Wolseley sagely describes the model as “the Mini-Cooper of Brighton cars”.

    IK 135 was built at Wolseley’s Crayford factory and despatched to Ireland. Its first recorded owner was Justin McCarthy of Glen of the Downs, County Wicklow. The car was probably imported into Ireland by agents John Hutton, Sons & Co., of Summerhill, County Dublin. In 1910 the Irish Motor Directory records the car still in McCarthy’s ownership and notes on file record subsequent ownership by Thomas Hynes of Dublin. In 1911 the Register of Motor Cars for the County of Dublin records ownership by Gerald Pepper of Bray who still owned the car in 1915. Subsequent history is not known until the car was bought in Sligo in the 1950s by Irish enthusiast G.W.M. Roycroft of Newbridge, in whose hands the car was actively rallied. In 1963 it passed into the ownership of that great Wolseley collector, Knollys Stokes of Cork, a founder member of the Irish Veteran & Vintage Car Club and director of the Blarney Motor Museum. In 1978/79 it was in the care of Denis Lucey who had a motor museum at Killarney. English enthusiast Alan Curry bought this car in 1981 and during his ownership the car was actively campaigned on the Brighton Road and in other V.C.C. events. Following Alan Curry’s death IK 135 was bought by John Stuttard (later Sir John Stuttard and Lord Mayor of London). In his ownership the car was mechanically restored as necessary in all areas, repainted and reupholstered. It was actively campaigned, successfully completing the Centenary re-enactment of the One Thousand Miles Trial in 2000. In 2002 it participated in the Tour du Léman and went on to win Class A in the Gordon Bennett Rally in Ireland that year. It completed a succession of London to Brighton Runs during the Stuttard ownership.

    This delightful and notably quick veteran light car is presented in blue livery with varnished wooden wheels and is upholstered in black leather. It is equipped with Lucas ‘King of the Road’ oil side lamps and a pair of rear lamps from the same manufacturer. It also has a brass rear-view mirror and bulb horn and still carries the rally plate confirming participation in the One Thousand Miles Trial Re-enactment.

    IK 135 comes with an impressive history file, old MoT records and tax discs, restoration and maintenance invoices and programmes for events in which it has participated. Importantly it comes with an extract from Copy of Register of Motor Cars for the County of Dublin from 1911, an original Wolseley Light Car Handbook covering the 6hp model, together with St. John C. Nixon’s Wolseley history, Wolseley A Saga of the Motor Industry. The car is V.C.C. dated and offered with Dating Certificate No.1542, issued in 1963, along with a Swansea registration document.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge what is known as a Buyer's Premium. Buyer's Premium on all Automobilia lots will adhere to Bonhams group policy:

25% up to £50,000 of hammer price,
20% from £50,001 to £1,000,000 of hammer price,
and 12% on the balance thereafter. This applies to each lot purchased and is subject to VAT.

For Motor Cars and Motorcycles a 15% Buyer's Premium is payable on the first £50,000 of the final Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on any amount by which the Hammer Price exceeds £50,000. VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
