Footnotes

  • With a background in bicycle manufacture, Humber entered motor vehicle production as early as 1896, displaying motorcycles at The International Horseless Carriage Exhibition that year, these machines being powered by Pennington 2hp engines. Humber later built Léon Bollée engines under licence and in 1902 acquired the rights to build Phelon & Moore engines under licence. The forecar design enjoyed a long vogue amongst various manufacturers, lasting until about 1907. The production of Humber vehicles was carried on at both Beeston, Nottingham, and at Coventry, there being some considerable rivalry between the two factories, the Beeston factory being reserved generally for production of the more expensive models.
For 1903 Humber’s Olympia Tandem came with a price tag of £75 or £21-11s-3d deposit and twelve monthly payments of £5-8s-0d. The air-cooled engine was built under Phelon & Moore licence, featured an automatic inlet valve and had a bore and stroke of 80 x 77mm, giving a capacity of 403cc.

This machine is in delightfully unmolested condition and known previous owners were a W.E. Rose of Woldingham prior to 1956 when the vehicle was acquired by S.W. White of Mitcham, Surrey. A thick file on this vehicle includes lots of correspondence and invoices relating to restoration work carried out by S.W. White in the mid-1950s. The machine was registered Y 1288 with Somerset County Council in 1912 and a letter on file confirming that may enable that number to be reallocated. Since acquisition for the collection this machine has not been run and now warrants careful restoration and the most careful conservation of the originality that it has in spades. We feel that little more than the ‘oily rag’ treatment to cosmetics will be appropriate. This forecar is eminently eligible for both the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and the Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club Pioneer Run. It comes with a good history file including a copy of a most useful handbook, however there are presently no registration papers offered with this vehicle.
