Lot 397
A rare John Browning astronomical heliostat,
English, circa 1870,

Sold for £ 900 (US$ 1,205) inc. premium
A rare John Browning astronomical heliostat, English, circa 1870,
the octagonal mirror mounted between a 6 1/2in telescope objective housing and the mirror support yoke, connected by two brass arcs with engraved quadrant scales, on rectangular wooden base set with magnetic compass, 36in (91cm) long

Footnotes

  • It has been suggested that this heliostat was made for Joseph Norman Lockyer. Lockyer bought his first telescope from Thomas Cooke who went on to encourage him in his astronomical observations and in 1862, he lent him a 6 1/4inch object glass to build a telescope with which he was to make his important observations during the following ten years. This heliostat was made for the size of Lockyer's telescope and as he was one of the few making solar spectrum research during this period, it is assumed that it could well be the one that he used.
